about

Rick Savage and Ian Smit have been playing together for the last several years in Warwick, NY with the Beyond Jazz Ensemble performing live improvisational works, as well as Action Painting improvs inspired by in the moment, back and forth conversations between musicians and painters.
Here, Savage on trumpet/flugelhorn and Smit on guitars/loops/effects/hammered dulcimer decided to engage in a more intimate setting of back-and-forth dialog in this live in the studio recording. Only Railing was tracked, as Smit could not play the hammered dulcimer, loops, acoustic and electric guitars at the same time without tripping over gear in a very tiny studio.
Educated at world renowned music school Indiana University, composer / producer / engineer, videographer Rick Savage has lived and worked in & around New York City and been a part of the recording industry for the past 30 years. He continues to be in demand as a performing & recording trumpet player, making guest solo appearances on the CD projects of many NY area artists.
Savage has played with an impressive list too many to name here, but a small sampling include: Tania Maria, Gerry Mulligan, The Temptations, Peggy Lee, Andy Williams (loved his TV show growing up! -smit), Blood Sweat & Tears, Mel Lewis, Mel Torme, The Jackson Five, Henry Mancini, Burt Bacharach, among many others. Please check his site: www.savagemultimedia.com
Smit wishes he played with Andy Williams, as his father requested him to play “a tune with a melody…a tune like Moon River!” It has happened, maybe not specifically on this recording, but a melodic influence is always present, even in the most densely, challenging, sonic excursions. Smit has played in various ensembles most notably Monkeyworks www.monkeyworks.squarespace.com, ian smit solo What…is iansmit.bandcamp.com/album/what-is-2 e’fessioux e-fessioux.bandcamp.com Beyond Jazz, QWERT, Sputnik 5.
